Splash patterns are known for giving a lot of chrome. Flashy socks and blazes or fully-white faces are not uncommon. Loud expression of splash can include being nearly or completely white. Many louder splashes look as if they have run through white paint, getting it splashed up the sides of their body. There are five known splash mutations on at least two different loci.
Splash-1, splash-3, and macchiato are all on the MITF gene. Macchiato is an irrelevant pattern as it only existed in a single horse, who was gelded and never produced offspring. Splash-1 is not homozygous lethal as was previously thought. Splash-3 is exclusive to the Paint line of TD Kid. Splash-2 is on the PAX3 gene and exists in the Quarter Horse line of Katie Gun. It is not thought to be homozygous lethal based on the discovery of a live homozygous SW2 horse. The information for splash-4 has not yet been published, but it is found only in the Appaloosa breed and broad blazes and splash patterning.
