The biological components behind the various colors and patterns of horses is a fascination for many of us. In my case, it is close to an obsession. Having personal ties with individuals who work for respectable laboratories that research equine color genetics helps me with my own knowledge. I have put together this little site for those of you who want information that is up to date.
This site will assume that the viewer has basic knowledge of biology and will understand vocabulary such as allele, chromosome, heterozygous, homozygous, and locus. Some text will be simplified in a way that is easy to understand while staying scientifically accurate. Please also take note that while we try to be as accurate as possible, it is simply not feasible to include an image of every possible shade for each color. There are horses that are extreme for their colors and some that seem to break "rules."

If you would like to provide photographs of horses for use as color examples on this website, please contact me. You must have permission to use or distribute the photos you wish to donate. All horses must be color tested through a reputable lab such as UC Davis or Animal Genetics. I will not accept horses tested through Etalon Diagnostics.
